Heroes are not
born. They are made.
Over 14 years
ago, this series had its start when my husband and I went out to eat
with the kids one evening. His chance remark became the glue that
held together various thoughts on a children’s book series. BOOM!
There it was. I then began to look for ways to get the series
published.
Several years
later I was driving to McDonough, Georgia, along Highway 42 going
south, when I saw firefighters
(Engine 8 Henry
County, Georgia)
preparing to burn down an old house. My camera was with me and I had
plenty of film, so naturally it followed I would stay all day and
shoot the event.
You will notice
Engine 8 is featured in this story.
About a year
later the Twin Towers were attacked. I don’t have to tell you the
emotions connected with that day. But what I do have to tell you is
this...
On that day I
decided the first book in the series would feature firefighters. But
how to tell a story about firefighters? I got to thinking about it.
What was the one thing each and every professional—and
professionally-acting volunteer— firefighter have in common. What is
that one thing that, when faced with life-threatening dangers, makes
a firefighter do his job so well?
That one thing is
practice. Yes, Practice with a capital P.
So, this book
is to honor all of our local heroes who know the value of practice.
Thank you.
